ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT:

Many modern wireless communication technologies rely on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The objective of our project is to explore the receiver performance at different configuration settings reflecting different data-rate-dependent computational requirements. We focus on soft-decision Viterbi decoding, incorporated into a receiver that uses polar coordinates (as opposed to conventional Cartesian coordinates) to represent complex-valued samples during frequency-domain processing of individual OFDM symbols. We demonstrate that the performance of a polar receiver with soft-decision Viterbi decoding is competitive with that of a Cartesian receiver with soft-decision Viterbi decoding, and we also evaluate various options for fixed-point data representation.
