ABSTRACT

Summary:

A minimally invasive, gesture-sensing system was designed to be use on traditional piston-valve trumpets. This system uses optical sensors place at the bottom of the valves, below the caps, to measure continuous valve displacement. A fundamental design consideration was that the instrument cannot be physically modified in any way. This, along with the configuration of the trumpet valves, presented a major constraint, in that a suitable location needed to be determine in order to effectively sense the valves position. To address this issue, a statistical analysis was performed to determine an appropriate sensor location.
