ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT:

In this seminar, we will concentrate on two topics to improve the performance of differential space-time block code (DSTBC) at either transmitter or receiver sides. It is known that conventional differential detection has 3 dB performance inferior to coherent detection. In addition, an irreducible error floor appears at high SNR when the channel is time-varying. The first half of the seminar focuses on the improved receiver named multistage receiver to be applied in time-varying channels. It tries to correct the assumption of fixed channel gains during a transmission block and reduces the error floor.

Since DSTBC itself does not provide coding gain, performance improvement is possible via a concatenated coding scheme. The second half of the seminar focuses on the concatenated coding scheme of DSTBC and trellis coded modulation (TCM). New design criteria for TCM are derived and new optimal TCM schemes have been found and outperform existing TCM schemes optimally designed for AWGN and Rayleigh flat fading channels.
