ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT:

In the past ten years, the Internet and the WWW have helped feed a real data explosion in people's lives. Whether they're buying a new computer, figuring out how traffic will be on the ride home, or answering email, many people feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information present today. Unfortunately, this flood of data too often harms rather than helps people in making decisions and managing their lives. My research develops ways to help people harness and understand information via user interface design, information visualization, and software agency. This presentation will focus on two projects. First, I will describe SunBurst, a system for helping people to analyze large, hierarchical information spaces, such as computer file systems, through visualizations. Second, I will discuss Information Art, a project that uses graphical ambient displays to help people maintain awareness of personally-relevant, interesting information.
