ABSTRACT

Accurate and fast processing of shallow water multibeam echo-sounder data is necessary to obtain high resolution bathymetric maps of a seafloor. The manual processing methods which are currently being used to identify the outliers in multibeam data, though accurate, are time consuming due to the large amount of data involved. In this talk, a multibeam echo-sounder system is introduced and a brief overview of outlier detection methods available in literature is given. A new automatic outlier detection method based on two-stage median filtering algorithm is proposed. Real field shallow water multibeam data sets are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results indicate that the proposed method is very successful in detecting outliers, in a very short time, without removing true objects on the seafloor.
