ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT:

Several celebrated results in C*-algebra theory assert that the C*-algebra generated by a semigroup of isometries depends only on the semigroup structure and not on the specific isometries. I will begin by discussing the classical results of Coburn, for the positive integers, and of Cuntz, for the free semigroup on n generators. Then I will show how a naive generalization leads naturally to a very interesting class of semigroups for which uniqueness and, somewhat surprisingly, non-uniqueness results are obtained.
