ABSTRACT

Indexing Chinese text presents some challenges that are not present when indexing latin-based languages such as English. The most significant challenge is due to the fact that Chinese text is written without word boundries. Most of the research on indexing Chinese text has gone into methods of segmenting the text into words. However, word based indexing in Chinese has some significant problems. Therefore this research looks at an alternative which is a refinment of single character indexing.
