Summary:

Optical trapping is a technique that uses focused laser light to manipulate small objects. By using interactions between light and apertures in a metal film to localize electric fields, this optical manipulation can be scaled below the diffraction limit. This method is capable of trapping objects as small as several nanometers. However, determining the properties of a trapped nanoparticle is one of the most pressing issues to the utilization of this method in a broader range of research and industrial applications. Here we present a method that utilizes the reflection of the nano-aperture to record the trapping event and uses Raman spectroscopy to determine the particle.
