ABSTRACT

Emerging mobile communication systems will require wider bandwidth, ultra-high speeds, and low latency. Currently, the communication networks are advancing to fifth generation (5G), which aims to use frequencies that lie in the sub-6GHz spectrum and millimeter-wave bands. In this new wireless communication network, the necessity of improving antenna performance plays an important role to implement it. It requires that antennas must have high gain and beam steering function, being able to focus the signal to a specified target.

Several methods have been reported as solutions to improve antenna systems, one of the favored is the use of electromagnetic (EM) periodic structures, such as frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs), due to their typical EM characteristics. FSSs can enable EM wave transmission or reflection at determined bands. We propose the design of FSS applied in 5G wireless network band. The circuits developed include the enhancement of the antenna’s gain, reconfigurability of two antenna systems and an antenna with polarization converter.
