ABSTRACT

During the last ICSE, David Parnas suggested that every researcher in software engineering should expend some time in industry in order to better understand the problems and current requirements faced by practitioners. Before joining UVic, I worked as a software engineer in a very large project. I will share some of my experiences and put them into the perspective of both, an educator and a re-searcher in SE. In the first half of this talk, I will comment on how a typical SE curriculum relates to the skills sought by industry. In the second half, I will com-ment on SE research problems which I believe are important from the point of view of industry.
