September Student Spotlight

Aaron Bailey, PhD student in SDH. Aaron has short dark brown hair that is slicked back at the front. He wears round tortoise shell coloured glasses and a brown zip-up Patagonia vest over a medium gray button-up shirt. He stands in front of the Cornett Building on UVic campus.

This month, we're celebrating two amazing accomplishments by our SDH students:

Aaron Bailey

Social Dimensions of Health PhD student and Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research staff member Aaron Bailey was awarded a SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship – Doctoral award in the 2024 competition for his proposal titled “Drug User-Centered Historicization of Involuntary Substance Use Care in British Columbia.”

Andrea White, PhD student in SDH. Andrea has light grey hair. She is wearing a white linen shirt with a V-neck. She takes a selfie on a cobblestone pier. The sky is bright blue with some clouds. Sailboats are docked on the right behind her with azure ocean on the left..

Andrea White

Andrea White, also a PhD student, has recently published a piece in New Sociology, Journal of Critical Praxis,  "Message on the Bulletin Board." https://nsjcp.journals.yorku.ca/index.php/default.

From the abstract, "This short fictional piece highlights the voices of psychiatric inpatients, as they are coming to a collective consciousness and reckoning with their oppression, loss of social status, and confinement."

Congratulations, Aaron and Andrea!
