Modern websites are user-driven. They consider the needs of the user first, and the needs of the organization second.

Most people are coming to your website to find information about a specific topic, or complete a task. People don't browse web content anymore, they search for it using targeted keywords or phrases.

UVic's web standards ensure that our audiences can find us on the web, and can interact with our web content once they arrive.

Accessible

Anyone visiting a UVic website should be able to interact with all content, navigate through every page and access every document, regardless of physical or cognitive ability.

Accessibility means making your content available to everyone, including people with disabilities.

Readable

Content on web pages should be straightforward and scannable to make reading and understanding information as easy as possible.

Readability impacts your likelihood of people finding your web pages in a search result, or your content being translated correctly into other languages.

Searchable

Web pages should be structured so that search engines (e.g. Google, Bing, Yahoo etc.) can easily crawl and understand the content on the page. This is often referred to as search engine optimization or SEO.

Content should rarely be reproduced on more than one web page and should be written clearly, in simple language that people would use to search.

Mobile-first

As more and more people use their mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.) to browse the web, all web pages should be clean and uncluttered, with small file sizes for the best possible experience on small screens.

A mobile-first approach is also important for SEO, as the most popular search engines rank a site based on how well it performs on a mobile device.

User-driven

Website content should be written for a specific audience and should be task-driven to help that audience find the information they need—without being bogged down by excess content or complicated navigation.

The user experience considers all the ways your audiences interact with you, both online and offline.
