Dear colleagues,

I am writing to share that our colleague and Acting Vice-President Academic and Provost, Susan Lewis, has been appointed Vice-Provost (Academic Programs) at Western University. After more than 20 years of dedicated service to UVic, I know this wasn't an easy decision for Susan, but it's an exciting career opportunity and will bring Susan closer to her family members living back east. She'll start in her new role in September.

During her years at UVic, Susan has been a change leader in the Faculty of Fine Arts and across the university. As a faculty member and Director of the School of Music, Susan provided strong mentorship and opportunities for teaching, learning, and research and artistic collaborations. As Dean of Fine Arts, she brought forward the Faculty's first strategic plan, helped increase enrolments, and drew in millions of dollars of donor funding. As Associate Vice-President Academic Planning, she supported the creation of new and culturally relevant programs and furthered experiential learning opportunities for students. And as Acting Vice-Provost, she implemented new actions to support UVic's EDI goals, including new anti-racism grants.

Perhaps most notable has been her incredible leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing confidence and continuity of the academic mission during a time of great change and uncertainty.

These are just a few of Susan's accomplishments (did you know she also plays the harpsichord?), and I think it's obvious to anyone who has worked closely with Susan that she is an exceptional leader, mentor and collaborator who excels at relationship building. I have certainly enjoyed working with Susan over the past 18 months, including as a recent Executive Council colleague.

Personally, I would like to thank Susan for taking on the role of Acting Provost and providing strong leadership in VPAC as we transition in Elizabeth Croft, who begins her term as Vice-President Academic and Provost on July 1. At that time, Susan will return to her role as Acting Vice-Provost until she begins her term at Western in September.

Please join me in congratulating Susan on this exciting chapter of her career and wishing her and her family well on their new adventure.
