Administrative and professional experience

Michele has been AVP, Faculty Relations and Academic Administration at UVic since 2017. Previously she served 13 years at Western University as the Director, Faculty Relations. Michele holds a law degree from University of Windsor, a master’s degree in Business Administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business and is a credentialed human resources professional. She brings prior experience as a civil litigator, labour and employment lawyer and Director of Human Resources.  She has instructed students in her areas of expertise in the PSE sector for many years.  She combines her love of travel and commitment to empowerment of women and girls by supporting related projects around the globe.

The Office of Faculty Relations and Academic Administration (FRAA) works collaboratively, on behalf of the university, to maintain positive relations with faculty and librarians through their representative (The UVic Faculty Association), and through those who provide leadership and administration in academic units.

FRAA provides support, advice, and administrative process to academic leaders and administrators in the following areas, pertaining to faculty and librarians:

  • Collective Agreement interpretation and administration  
  • Policy interpretation and administration
  • Recruitment and retention
  • Appointment and Reappointment processes
  • Compensation and Benefits
  • Leave requests and administration
  • Tenure and promotion processes
  • Work engagement and performance 
  • Health and well-being, illness and accommodation
  • Best human resources practices including, but not limited to: equity, diversity, human rights, privacy and due process (in collaboration with university partners).

In addition, the AVP, Faculty Relations and Academic Administration is responsible for faculty/librarian collective agreement negotiation, policy development, and advice to leaders on human resources issues and student academic matters (including student academic accommodation and academic misconduct).

VPAC is dedicated to recruiting and retaining a diverse group of exceptionally talented faculty and supporting them in ways that allow them to achieve their highest potential. In this position, reporting to the VP academic and provost, the AVP faculty relations and academic administration is responsible for all faculty relations matters at UVic including:

  • recruitment and retention issues
  • the negotiation, interpretation and administration of the faculty Collective Agreement
  • drafting new university policies and procedures and advice interpreting existing policies related to faculty

Working closely with the director, faculty renewal and academic leadership initiatives, and the adviser to the provost on equity and diversity, this portfolio includes support and training of academic administrators.

As a practicing lawyer, the AVP faculty relations and academic administration provides legal advice to deans, chairs, directors and senior administrators on matters related to faculty, students, and academic policies, procedures and regulations.
