About Michele Parkin

Michele has been AVP, Faculty Relations and Academic Administration at UVic since 2017. Previously she served 13 years at Western University as the Director, Faculty Relations. In addition, she brings prior experience as a civil litigator, labour and employment lawyer and Director of Human Resources.

Michele has instructed post-secondary students in her areas of expertise for many years. She combines her love of travel and commitment to empowerment of women and girls by supporting related projects around the globe.

Initiatives & responsibilities

The Office of Faculty Relations and Academic Administration (FRAA) works collaboratively, on behalf of the university, to maintain positive relations with faculty and librarians through their representative (UVic Faculty Association), and through those who provide leadership and administration in academic units. In this position, reporting to the VP Academic and Provost, the AVP Faculty Relations and Academic Administration is responsible for all faculty relations and academic administration matters at UVic.

FRAA provides support, advice, and administrative process to academic leaders and administrators in the following areas, pertaining to faculty and librarians:

  • Collective Agreement interpretation and administration  
  • Policy interpretation and administration
  • Recruitment and retention
  • Appointment and Reappointment processes
  • Compensation and Benefits
  • Leave requests and administration
  • Tenure and promotion processes
  • Work engagement and performance 
  • Health and well-being, illness and accommodation
  • Best human resources practices including, but not limited to: equity, diversity, human rights, privacy and due process (in collaboration with university partners)

In addition, the AVP, Faculty Relations and Academic Administration is responsible for faculty/librarian collective agreement negotiation, policy development, and advice to leaders on human resources issues.
