TSM installation and configuration: Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

Step 1: Register your computer for TSM

To register your computer, visit the online administration page. Login with your primary NetLink ID and password.

  1. Click on Create, located under Nodes.
  2. Name your node appropriately by following the instructions on the administration page. Nodes have three components that must combine to make a unique name within TSM:
    • The first component is your department code. Select the appropriate one from the drop-down list (by default, the department you are associated with will appear at the top of the list).
    • The second is a sub-group name within your department. You can enter a pre-existing sub-group or create your own.
    • The third can be anything you wish. You can also create an additional sub-group by separating values with a period.

Be sure to select your operating system from the corresponding drop-down list and click Create. If necessary, you can rename or remove accounts after they have been created.

Step 2: Download the TSM client

Select your operating system:

Don't know your operating system? Click on the Windows icon and then right click on Computer (or My Computer). Select Properties. Basic information, including the operating system and system type, will be displayed.

A window will open. Save the TSMBAC file to a place where you can retrieve it later.

Step 3: Install the TSM client

  1. Navigate to where you saved your TSMBAC file and double click on the file. (If you didn't specify where you wanted to save the file, it's likely stored in your Downloads folder.)
  2. Select a location to save the files (we recommend leaving the default folder). Click the Next button.
  3. Select your installation language (i.e. English). Click OK.
  4. Eventually, you will see a welcome screen. Click Next.
  5. Leave the destination folder as is (c:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\) and click Next.
  6. Choose Typical as the setup type. Click Next.
  7. Click Install to begin the installation.
  8. You should see a screen informing you that the application was installed successfully.

Step 4: Download and configure the dsm.opt file using Notepad

  1. Download the TSM Settings file. Click here and save the link.
    • If prompted, enter your NetLink ID and password.
    • Leave the file name as dsm.opt and select All Files from the file type drop-down list. Click Save.
    • Save the file to your TSM>baclient folder (i.e. C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient). If you receive an administrator error when trying to save to the baclient folder, save the file to your desktop.
  2. Open the newly downloaded dsm.opt file in Notepad or another text editing application.
  3. Near the top of the file, under USER SETTINGS, replace the generic TSM NODEname with the TSM Node Name you registered for your computer. For example, if your TSM Node Name is dept.alpha.computer, you would replace mydept.mynetlink-id.mycomp with dept.alpha.computer. If you have forgotten your Node Name, login to the administration page to see your nodes.
  4. If you would like to specify which drive(s) on your computer you would like to have backed up, list the drive(s) under the DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL -SYSTEMOBJECT heading. Many computers use the letters C: or D: to represent their hard drives. If you leave the dsm.opt file as is, every drive on your computer will be backed up.
  5. Save your changes and close your text editing application. If you saved the file to your desktop, click and drag the file into the baclient folder.

Step 5: Launch the TSM client and finish configuring the options file

  1. Open the Start menu and select All Programs then Tivoli Storage Manager. Click on Backup-Archive GUI.
  2. You will be prompted for your User id (i.e. the node name you registered for your computer) and the password associated with your node name.
  3. If the Configuration Wizard does not automatically begin, select Utilities > Setup Wizard from the top menu. Then check the box beside Help me configure the TSM Client Options File and click Next.
  4. Select Import from an existing options file for use.
  5. The correct file path should appear. If it doesn't, Browse your computer for the recently edited dsm.opt file and click Next.
  6. Your TSM Node Name should appear in the Node Name field. If it doesn't you may have configured your dsm.opt file incorrectly.
  7. Select TCP/IP as the communication method.
  8. For the Server Address, type backup.uvic.ca. Leave the port as 1500.
  9. You may specify which folders and file types to include or exclude. We recommend keeping the default settings, as specified in the dsm.opt file. Click Next until you get to the Apply and Finish options.


  10. If prompted, enter your node name and password.
  11. TSM configuration should now be complete. Click Finish.

Step 6: Configure automatic nightly backups

  1. Open the Start menu, click All Programs > Tivoli Storage Manager > Backup-Archive GUI.
  2. On the Utilities menu, select Setup Wizard.
  3. Check the box next to Help me configure the TSM Client Scheduler and click Next.
  4. Begin defining the scheduler by clicking Next.
  5. Choose to Install a new or additional scheduler. Click Next.
  6. Name the schedule TSM Client Scheduler. Check the box next to Use the Client Acceptor daemon... (under Local Machine) and click Next.
  7. Leave the TSM acceptor name as is and click Next.
  8. Leave the Option File Name as is and click Next.
  9. Leave the Port Number as is and click Next.
  10. The Node Name should display your personal node name. If it doesn't, you likely configured the dsm.opt file incorrectly. Enter your TSM Password and click Next.
  11. Keep The System account selected. Click on the radio button next to Automatically when Windows boots and click Next.
  12. Leave the log file names as they are and click Next.
  13. Choose Yes and click Next.
  14. Click Apply at the confirmation screen.
  15. You should now see the Completing your configuration box and be taken back to the main Tivoli Storage Manager window. Configuration is now complete.
  16. You can check whether the automatic TSM-Backup Scheduler worked by visiting your TSM Backup and Archive Administrator webpage the next day and seeing the results.

Step 7: Manual computer backups (optional)

You can choose to manually backup files without using the automated scheduler. This is called a manual backup.

  1. Open the Tivoli Storage Manager. In the Actions menu, select Backup Domain.
  2. If the Task List window pops up, it indicates that the client is correctly configured to backup.
  3. If the client completes correctly, you will see the following screenshot:

Step 8: Selective backups (optional)

You can choose to selectively backup files without using the automated scheduler. This is called a selective backup.

  1. Open the Tivoli Storage Manager. Select Backup from the main interface.
