Configure Exchange: Outlook Express for Windows XP

Although University Systems has confirmed that this email client works with Exchange, please be aware that Outlook Express is not a fully supported application. For a list of supported email clients, visit our key features of email clients page.

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Accounts....
  2. Select the Mail tab.
  3. Click the Add button.
  4. From the Add menu, click Mail.
  5. In the text box labelled Display Name, type your name, and then click Next.
  6. In the Email address box, type your UVic email address ( Click Next.
  7. Select IMAP for incoming mail server.
  8. Type in the Incoming mail box.
  9. Type in the Outgoing (SMTP) box. Click Next.
  10. In the Account name box, type your NetLink ID.
  11. If you are using a secure workstation you may choose to enter your password.
  12. Check the Log on using secure password... box. Click Next.
  13. Click Finish.
  14. Select the account that you just set up from the list shown under the mail tab and click Properties.
  15. Select the Advanced tab.
  16. Click the checkbox labelled This server requires a secure connection (SSL) that is beneath Incoming Mail (IMAP). This will change the port number for the IMAP server to 993.
  17. Click on the OK button. Your account will now be using a secure connection.
  18. Click Close.
  19. Choose Yes when asked Would you like to download folders from the email server you added?
  20. If prompted, enter your password.
  21. In the folder list, choose those folders you wish to be able to view in Outlook Express, and click the Go To button. (By default, it will already include In, Sent, and Drafts among the visible folders.)
  22. Double click a folder to synchronize your folder with the server.
