UVic Endpoint Protection

Protect Your Computers with New Endpoint Security by August 30, 2021:

Computers at the University of Victoria are at risk of regular cyber attacks that attempt to use malicious software to gain unauthorized access to information and cause disruption. We manage this risk through the use of endpoint protection software which detects and prevents suspicious and or malicious activity.

Endpoint protection software, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (MSDE), is mandatory on all university computers as part of our Information Security Standards and is available free of charge for all UVic faculty and staff using UVic-owned Windows, Mac, and Linux workstations.

The previous standard endpoint protection software, Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP), will no longer receive software updates as of August 30, 2021. You must transition to MSDE before this date to ensure your computer remains protected. If you are supported by University Systems Desktop Support Services (DSS), you do not need to take any action as DSS is ensuring the computers DSS manages are protected.

Your IT support person may have already contacted you to regarding MSDE. If you manage your own computer, please visit the University Systems website for more information and installation instructions: https://www.uvic.ca/systems/services/informationsecurity/facultystaffantivirus/index.php
