Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol blocked

Due to a critical security vulnerability in the Microsoft Remote Desktop service, University Systems has taken necessary steps to temporarily block all Remote Desktop traffic from off campus.

If you require the ability to Remote Desktop to a host on campus, you must use the VPN service to securely connect to UVic prior to establishing a Remote Desktop Connection.  Instructions to download and install the UVic VPN client can be found on the University Systems website:

http://www.uvic.ca/systems/support/internettelephone/remoteaccess/index.php

If you are unable to connect to your Remote Desktop destination after connecting using VPN, please contact your IT support staff or the Computer Help Desk for assistance.

Microsoft has released a patch for this vulnerability.  Details of this patch can be found on the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms12-020

University Systems strongly recommends that this update be applied as soon as possible to all Windows hosts.  Despite the availability of a patch for this problem, the number of vulnerable hosts on campus is significant and we are blocking Remote Desktop traffic to allow UVic users time to patch their systems.
