Changes to NetLink - December 2015

A renovation is underway for the University of Victoria NetLink website.  The NetLink system has been in place for over 20 years and has been long overdue for an upgrade to keep pace with the demands of a growing university.

Beginning in December, the first phase for the new NetLink system was introduced.  The primary changes for our new UVic students and staff using the system was a more modern looking appearance and an intuitive workflow to claim their NetLink ID for UVic.  We have raised the limit for new NetLink IDs from a maximum of 8 characters up to a maximum of 20 characters.  We have also “raised the bar” for secure passwords, now termed as ‘passphrase’ in the new system, allowing for a passphrase length of up to 30 characters.

On December 17, 2015, the next iteration of this upgrade will take place to allow UVic students, faculty, and staff to reset their NetLink passphrase using an alternate method of contact.  Available at www.uvic.ca/uvicid, this self-service method of resetting a forgotten passphrase will use your alternate email address or mobile telephone number to perform a passphrase reset.

In 2016, we will be adding additional features to the system to allow for:

  • addition of verification email and / or SMS Text to a mobile phone for retrieving forgotten passphrases
  • improved capability to manage your NetLink ID
  • expanding NetLink ID account services to UVic Community members
  • changes to the management of Secondary NetLink IDs
