Meet Luciano

About
My name is Luciano and I am an advanced practicum counsellor here at the Student Wellness Centre. My pronouns are he/him and I identify as a cisgender, able bodied, white male. I come from a large family with European heritage (Italian, English, and Scottish) and I have been an uninvited guest on these lands for 29 years, the past 10 of which have been on the unceded lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) and W̱ŚANÉC traditional territories. I enjoy spending time outdoors and with family and friends.
I completed my undergraduate degree with a BSc (combined major: biology and psychology) through UVic, where I also played on the Vikes men’s hockey team. In the time that followed I played professionally in Europe for 2 years before beginning a position as a Behaviour Interventionist where I worked with children and teens on the Autism Spectrum. I am currently in my final year of the Master of Counselling program through City University.
*Note: Advanced Practicum counsellors are here from Sept 2022 to April 2023.
Counselling approach
I am very enthusiastic about the role that athletics play in mental health and well being. I hope to integrate my experience as being an athlete with my approach in counselling. I have a keen interest in performance anxiety, whether it is in sports, school, work, or other aspects of daily life. Ultimately, I am in this field because I have a passion for helping others, especially those who are at a significant stage of change in their lives.
My approach to counselling is client centred with the therapeutic relationship at the forefront. I believe that people have unique needs which will require a tailored approach to counselling and that the therapeutic process will look different for everyone. My goal is to create a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment where change can take place.
