Fundraiser: loita Maasai in Tanzania

Nearly a decade ago, the Maasai people negotiated a settlement over traditional lands with the Tanzanian government. Now in an effort to build the capacity of its directors for their ongoing Indigenous rights work the Enguserosambu Forest Trust (EFT) has partnered with Kesho Trust, a Canadian NGO that works out of Tanzania and UVic's geography department to set up a cultural exchange.

The afternoon fundraiser on May 1st marks the beginning of the Maasai’s two-week study tour of Western Canada, including several First Nations communities on Vancouver Island and the Yukon. During their trip, the Maasai will discuss their traditional knowledge of natural resource management practice as well as participate in seminars and workshops.

The fundraiser May 1 is open to the public and will be held at 2 p.m. in room A102 in the David Turpin Building. Presented by the Kesho Trust, Centre for Global Studies, Department of Geography. Funding provided by University of Victoria and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
