Practicum counsellor
Student Wellness Centre

My name is Sarah, and I am a practicum student counsellor currently pursuing my Masters of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology at UVic. I grew up on Okanagan and Secwépemc territories in Kelowna and Salmon Arm, and feel very privileged to have been a visitor on the territories of the L’kwungen, WSÁNEĆ, and Esquimalt peoples since 2010. My pronouns are she and her.

In previous work/volunteer settings I have facilitated psychoeducation and support groups for young adults who experience anxiety, provided text-based online support to at-risk youth, and worked as a Community Support Worker with adults with developmental disabilities.

Counselling approach

I believe that sharing both painful experiences and successes/triumphs with others in a respectful environment can be a healing and meaningful experience. My counselling approach is informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as interpersonal and experiential approaches. I use mindfulness to help individuals build an awareness of their experiences (emotions, thoughts, and bodily sensations) and use a strengths-focused approach to identify students’ values, abilities, and resources, collaboratively creating strategies for pursuing the life you envision for yourself.

I also acknowledge that we each hold intersecting places of privilege and oppression — I am interested in exploring how environment and relationships impact your wellbeing, and wish to support you in creating plans for self/community care, and developing a strong capacity for self-compassion.

Areas of interest:

I appreciate time in the company of my friends and family, and I consider myself a board game enthusiast. I dabble in many forms of creative expression, including music, nature photography, pottery, and painting, and love seeing others’ creative projects!
