Changes in UVic's child care services

Child Care Services finalizes after school care program for 2017-18

The University of Victoria’s Child Care Services has concluded arrangements to provide after school care for the 2017-18 academic year. UVic is fulfilling its decision to reconfigure Centre 6, closing the after school care program and creating up to 40 new, full day 3-5 year old spaces.

Following consultations with the joint University - Faculty Association Child Care Committee, after school care with a community partner and UVic’s Child Care Services Family Centre has been arranged for current Centre 6 families who have an existing affiliation with UVic as students, staff and faculty members, whose children will be enrolled at elementary schools in the fall of 2017 (Grade 1 to Grade 5 only).

UVic is committed to helping parents with their child care needs and considers Child Care Services to be an important support for the campus community. UVic will invest $1.7 million over the next year to renovate all child care facilities and reconfigure space within the current facilities, in order to add 50,000 hours of child care.

For the 2017-18 school year, the university has reached an agreement with Recreation Oak Bay to open spaces in their program that will provide after school care at the Henderson Recreation Centre for the cohort of eligible children attending Campus View Elementary School. Deadline for registration in after school care for September 2017 is June 9, 2017. Child Care Services has committed to supporting the registration process by providing a confirmed list of eligible children requiring after school care in their program.

Eligible children enrolled at Frank Hobbs Elementary School, McKenzie Elementary and École Victor-Brodeur will be offered after school care in a program to be held at UVic’s Child Care Services Family Centre for the 2017-18 school year. This is a temporary solution that will end in June 2018. Child Care Services expects that a longer term solution for this program's future will be determined by Feb. 1, 2018. Confirmation for re-registration for this after school care program is also June 9, 2017.

There are differences in the level of service available with each after school program.

The Child Care Services Family Centre program can accommodate early dismissal days. However, due to the shared-use nature of this facility, after school care will not be available on professional development days and school holidays. Parents can register for additional child-care coverage at various community programs including Recreation Oak Bay.

Further instructions and communications will be emailed directly to Centre 6 parents. As well, other details about after school care can be found in the frequently asked questions section.
