James Webb Telescope Unveils Young Planet Growth
A team of Astronomy Research Centre researchers, led by University of Victoria PhD candidate Dori Blakely, have used the James Webb Space Telescope to capture an unprecedented look at planet formation. By studying the young star PDS 70—370 light-years away—they observed two growing planets competing for material in their early stages of development. The study, published in the Astronomical Journal on Feb. 12, showcases how JWST’s advanced interferometry mode reveals new details about planetary evolution, offering insights into how solar systems, including our own, take shape.
