Astronomy Open House
You say you do not know a red dwarf from a black hole? Astronomy open houses give you the chance to learn about the cosmos!

Want to learn the latest in scientific research or book an event for your community group? Events, open houses and seminars help connect you with some of the fascinating research happening on campus.

Astronomy Open Houses

The Department of Physics and Astronomy host weekly Astronomy open houses on Wednesday evenings. These events, open to all, give you a chance to discover everything you've wanted to know about the sky!

In addition to the regular Wednesday night open houses, they also invite groups of 20 to visit our dome facility for daytime tours.

Cafe Scientifique

The Café Scientifique series is an informal series of talks given in an relaxed setting. These talks are designed to engage the public in learning about recent research in science. The talks, which are given by experts in the field, provide an opportunity to stimulate discussion around some of the most exciting topics in modern science.

Café Scientifique is sponsored jointly by UVic's Office of the Vice President Research and the Faculty of Science and is hosted by the Centre for Biomedical Research and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Health-related topics are co-funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR).

Ideafest

Ideafest is the university’s annual research festival, showcasing the ideas of faculty, students and staff.

Each year, new and emerging research is explained, debated, re-worked and brought to life in panels, workshops, exhibits, presentations, performances, and tours. This event offers a chance to explore and celebrate UVic scholarship and attracts thousands of participants from both the on-campus and greater Victoria communities.

Let's Talk Science

Let's Talk Science provides science outreach to children and youth, in classrooms and the community.

Community groups, libraries, summer camps, after-school programs and community festivals can request volunteers to incorporate hands-on STEM learning in their programs.

Speakers Bureau

The UVic Speakers Bureau is a community service provided by volunteer speakers from among the faculty, staff, graduate students and retirees who teach, conduct research, study and work at the University of Victoria.

Through the bureau, experts and knowledgeable individuals from UVic make themselves available to speak to community groups, schools, clubs and other organizations throughout Greater Victoria and southern Vancouver Island.

UVic Women in Science

UVic Women in Science aims to build a supportive and engaging environment that fosters collaboration and success of women pursuing science fields. The group hosts social events, guest lectures and professional development seminars, many of which are open to the public.
