Expertise Profile
Dr. Wade Danis is a professor of international business who studies how firms compete globally.

He is specifically interested in looking at international entrepreneurship, a relatively new area of inquiry that addresses the question of how young firms expand into international markets and become internationally competitive.

Much of what we know about this topic is based on studies of entrepreneurs from advanced markets like the U.S. Our understanding of international entrepreneurs from important emerging markets, such Russia, China or India, is quite limited, despite their growing prominence in the global economy.

Because entrepreneurs are the driving force behind national economic growth, innovation, and international competitiveness, it's important to understand how they recognize and pursue international business opportunities and how entrepreneurs from emerging markets in particular compete with global firms from more advanced markets.

Part of that research examines the cultural and institutional values that give entrepreneurs their competitive streak. Understanding how entrepreneurs in emerging markets grasp international business opportunities can help other emerging countries become more competitive in the global economy.

"By focusing on people as potential entrepreneurs, we're looking at a powerful way of lifting developing nations out of poverty," he says.

Dr. Danis' classes are composed of a wide pool of international students who bring a diversity of experience, a strength he uses to generate lively discussions.

Students in his international business classes complete international consulting projects, which include short study trips to emerging markets such as Brazil, China and India, where students conduct field research and engage with practising managers, entrepreneurs and policy-makers.

In 2012, Dr. Danis was nominated the inaugural recipient of the Gustavson Leader in Excellence Award, which recognizes the business school's faculty for their research achievements.
