Expertise Profile
Dr. Deborah Begoray is expanding the meaning - and teaching - of literacy.

The professor of language and literacy with the University of Victoria's Faculty of Education wants to make literacy a priority in public schools on Vancouver Island and beyond.

Literacy can mean reading and writing - but can also include film, audio and images, says Dr. Begoray.

One of her research projects had Grade 7 students film and produce ads for healthy food and beverage options in their schools. By teaching them to think critically about how ads are made, Dr. Begoray hopes that students will question the advertiser's agenda the next time they see a diet Coke ad on TV.

Dr. Begoray has secured over $1 million in external funding for her research. In 2012, she received the Faculty of Education Award for Excellence in Research.

Her work has led to curriculum development and teaching strategies that are now used in public school classrooms, community health clinics, a First Nations community school and medical education classrooms.

Her students, both pre-service and in-service teachers alike, learn how to incorporate literacy and critical thinking into their classrooms.

Dr. Begoray has published multiple books and articles, and most recently edited a collection on health literacy with contributors from around the world.
