International Involvement

International Research

My general research interests cover several topics:
Intellectual/cultural interactions between China and the West from medieval times onward.
The history of colonial empires and decolonisation.
Post-colonial social and political conditions in various parts of the Third World.
I am currently engaged in a SSHRC-funded project on Western social theorists writing on China from 1914 to 1941, and I am a co-investigator on the SSHRC-funded collaborative research initiative devoted to comparing Asian nationalisms.
