Research objectives and facilities


ESTP researchers are interested in transport phenomena and integration in energy systems. Our research topics include fuel cells, transport phenomena, hydrogen dispersion and safety, and wind energy integration.

Utilization of hydrogen fuel has been a major thrust of the ESTP lab for many years. The development of safe hydrogen fuel cells is a critical task. We employ laser diagnostic techniques to quantitatively measure hydrogen dispersion in a leakage situation to provide guidelines in hydrogen storage and utilization. We focus on smart grid modeling to address system level issues and propose new control strategies for integrating intermittent power sources. Last but not least, we recognize that infrastructure and system integration are key to successful commercialization and deployment of renewable energy systems.
