NSERC Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) Grant

Discipline: Science and Engineering

Internal deadline: September 23 (UVic manadatory Peer Review)

External deadline: October 25 annually

Additional information

The RTI program fosters and enhances the discovery, innovation and training capability of university researchers in the natural sciences and engineering by supporting the purchase of research equipment and installations. Grants are one-year awards of up to $150,000 to support the purchase or development of research equipment with a total net cost between $7,001 and $250,000.

Just a reminder that NSERC has recently updated the Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) program, removing the university quotas and opening the competition to all eligible Canadian researchers. Researchers will be able to participate on one application per competition, either as an applicant or a co-applicant, but not both.

Our office recognizes the importance of this funding opportunity to secure much-needed equipment; therefore, we will be implementing a mandatory UVic RTI Peer Review process with the aim of improving the quality of submissions in what may be a very competitive program this year, and to proactively address any overlap with CFI and other institutional programs. We will facilitate peer reviews to provide feedback to your applications, which can be incorporated into your final submission.

Please note the following important dates:

September 23 – deadline to submit draft application for mandatory UVic RTI Peer Review

Applicants should email an application package to me (Nicole Kitson, grants@uvic.ca) containing:

a) A Canadian Common CV (www.ccv-cvc.ca) for just the lead applicant (PI).

b) The application for Research Tools and Instruments (available on the NSERC’s portal). Details on the RTI program and instructions can be found here.

c) Letter(s) confirming the availability of any funding to be used to supplement the NSERC RTI funding.

Please bundle these components as a single PDF file and send to grants@uvic.ca

Week of September 30th – peer review feedback will be provided to applicants

October 18 – internal deadline

Please submit a copy of your full application, accompanied by your Research Application Summary Form for review, feedback, and institutional approval.

October 25 – external deadline

By this date, you will need to press submit on the application in the portal. The application will come to me to complete electronic approval of your application and push it forward to the funding agency.
