Giving Opportunities

Special Fund for CFGS Students + Post-docs in Response to COVID-19

Despite the difficult times in the world today, generosity and community spirit prevail. To that extent, we are very pleased to be able to share some good news with you all.

Recently, a donor has come forward who has graciously offered to match any donations (up to an aggregate of $10,000 depending on the amount of matching funds received from other donors) made directly to Centre for Global Studies students and postdoctoral scholars —domestic or international, undergraduate or graduate—who are experiencing emergency financial need as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is our intention that the funds will help students facing challenges such as job loss, access to housing, food, tuition, or technology to facilitate online/remote learning, mental health services, child care, transportation, and more.

Who is eligible

If you are a student or a postdoctoral scholar who currently considers CFGS your scholarly community,  you are regularly in the halls, and are an active member of the ongoing Global Talks then this is open to you. If you think this may be you, and aren’t sure, please do not hesitate to email and we will consider your request.

How to Apply

We want to keep the process as simple as possible so to get the funds to those in need ASAP. If you feel you are in need, please email us at with responses to the following questions:

  1. Are you a current student/fellow/postdoctoral scholar with the CFGS?
  2. How much UVic COVID-19 Support Bursary funding are you requesting (up to $500)?
  3. Please indicate the financial impact you have experienced due to COVID-19, and any other COVID-19 financial aid programs you have applied for and are receiving?

The CFGS will respond to submitted applications received in date order as soon as possible. Your privacy is important to us. All applications will be treated in strict confidentiality with our adjudication team – Oliver Schmidtke (Director), Jodie Walsh (Operations Director, Research Coordinator, and Jennifer Swift (Finance and Special Projects Manager).

How to Donate

We realize there are other funds currently circulating but we also know that our internal community is also experiencing specific needs. It is with this intention that our donor has offered this funding. We hope this will help alleviate some of the daily pressures with basic needs so our members continue to feel supported and can maintain the important research and community work they are engaging with in the virtual CFGS.

If you are able, please consider joining us in supporting students through this crisis by making a gift today. Donations of all sizes are very welcome and will be matched by our donor (up to an aggregate of $10,000). All donations are tax deductible and receipts will be issued.
