From the VFF website:

Once a darling of Western democratic ideals, Myanmar’s revered Aung San Suu Kyi has taken quite a hit on the world stage lately for her response to the Burmese Rohingyan crisis. How did a Nobel Peace Prize winner find herself on the wrong side of a human rights travesty? To understand this incredible contradiction of Myanmar, you must first understand another one: Ashin Wirathu.

Ashin, the titular Venerable W., embodies an incredible cognitive dissonance. He is a popular Buddhist leader who espouses a deep appreciation of peaceful Buddhism and yet still actively advocates discrimination against Muslims, especially the Rohingya. Through this doc, we get a unique chance to know the man in his own words and thoughts as well as those of his contemporaries. Through his upbringing and influences, we get a chance to understand the broader scope of Mynamar as a whole. These are a people and a country far more complex than our black-and-white understanding of their democratic struggle.

The final title in director Schroeder’s much spread-out “Trilogy of Evil”, which started out with 1974’s General Idi Amin Dada & 2007’s Terror’s Advocate, this doc deftly sheds much light on the under-reported foundations of the current Rhoingyan travesty. However, what Schroeder offers is much broader than just the history and circumstance. Ashin’s 969 movement not only has clear cultural parallels to the feelings of xenophobia worldwide, it also breaks down how the noblest of ideas falls prey to the most obvious of spiritual poisons.
