All faculty, staff and students engaged in fieldwork for research or teaching should familiarize themselves with the new Off-Campus Activity Risk Management Policy.   A travel safety website has also been developed to assist with international travel planning, including a travel registry, as well as resources for fieldwork and field schools, and guidance for faculty and staff who are leading or sending students abroad.

Field research

Researchers who are conducting fieldwork, especially in remote or wilderness locations, are advised to complete a Field Safety Plan to document the safety and emergency response procedures for all field participants.

Specialized safety plans are required for projects involving scientific diving and must be completed in consultation with the UVic Diving Safety Officer.  If you plan on utilizing a boat as part of your fieldwork, please refer to our Boating safety webpage.

OHSE continues to offer Wilderness and Marine Basic First Aid training annually for faculty and students whose research or academic studies involve fieldwork in remote or wilderness locations.  Please check our training website for current offerings.
