Michael Audain
Sacred teachings, creative practice
The Audain Professorship of Contemporary Art Practice of the Pacific Northwest brings Indigenous artists into UVic's classrooms. Audain professors, each practicing contemporary artists, split their time between the studio and teaching a course, which is open to all students across campus.

When it came to selecting an artist for the inaugural Audain Professorship in Contemporary Art Practice of the Pacific Northwest, the choice for Visual Arts department chair Daniel Laskarin was clear: it had to be Rebecca Belmore. “She’s a First Nations artist of substantial repute, a person with a strong international reputation who had represented Canada at the Venice Bienale, and one who could give our students the benefit of her skills and experience,” explains Laskarin.
Audain’s $2m gift to visual arts
The Ring
Visual Arts students at the University of Victoria will benefit from a $2-million gift from BC art philanthropist Michael Audain and the Audain Foundation. The gift will establish the Audain Professorship in Contemporary Art Practice of the Pacific Northwest, bringing a distinguished practicing artist to teach in UVic’s Department of Visual Arts.
