UVic microbiology student named Rhodes Scholar

University of Victoria (UVic) microbiology graduate Shaeleen (Shae) Mihalynuk is bound for England, having been named as the province’s Rhodes Scholar for 2025. Mihalynuk is one of 11 young Canadians, and the only one in BC, chosen for the prestigious scholarship, which provides two fully funded years of post-graduate studies at England’s Oxford University.

For Shaeleen (Shae) Mihalynuk, there are three things in life that matter most: community, health and joy. There has certainly been joy in Mihalynuk’s life recently. On Nov. 18, the microbiology alumna was announced as BC’s Rhodes Scholar for 2025.

Tony Giovando (BA ’98, MPA ‘04) credits his time at UVic for helping him create two successful careers. His positive experience at UVic inspired him and his wife to establish the Leonard and Eileen Hamilton Scholarship in Spanish and Italian Studies. The gift honours his grandparents, who were a crucial part of his success at UVic.

2018 Vanier scholars

Three UVic researchers have received 2018 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships—one of the federal government’s most prestigious scholarships for doctorial students and post-doctoral researchers. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of students’ extraordinary combination of academic excellence, research potential and leadership.

The Irving K. Barber BC Scholarship Society delivers a series of scholarship and award programs that support BC students throughout the province and outside the country. In 2018, 10 UVic students were awarded 33 per cent of the Premier’s awards, more than any other BC institution this year.
