When Paige Quinn first moved to Vancouver Island to start her undergraduate degree, she intended on becoming an elementary school teacher. She had always loved working with children and grew up with a mother who taught grade one. But taking one of UVic's Exercise Science, Physical Health and Education classes hooked her on the program. She graduates this month.

Rethinking culture

Hector Vazquez Cordoba, a PhD student in the Faculty of Education, came to UVic in response to a calling he felt to enhance music education in schools throughout Mexico. Now an accomplished violinist and tenured member of the Orquesta Universitaria de Música Popular in Xalapa, Hector wanted to bring classical music to young people in small communities.

Lorna Williams receives Indspire Award

Wanosts’a7 Lorna Williams, Lil’watul from Mount Currie BC, is being honoured with a 2018 Indspire Award for her contributions to Indigenous education. At UVic, the Professor Emerita Williams co-designed and developed three degree programs in collaboration with Indigenous communities: the bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Indigenous language revitalization, and the Counselling in Indigenous Communities master’s degree program.

One mind, one people and 42 Indigenous languages

A new language revitalization project led by the University of Victoria will bring new life and strength to at least 42 Indigenous languages in Canada. NEȾOLṈEW̱ will work with nine Indigenous-led partner organizations across the country, forming a learning and research network to strengthen efforts to revive Indigenous languages.

Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator

Chaw-win-is is the recently appointed Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator within the Faculty of Education. “This position and others initiatives like it across Canada,” says Chaw-win-is, “are a result of the on-going efforts of Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous allies all across Canada who have been generating awareness about colonization within the education system.”

MAPs for Indigenous language learning

Adult learners are a "missing generation" in Indigenous language revitalization. The majority of fluent speakers are 70 years of age or older and although young children in immersion are speaking their languages in increasing numbers, many Indigenous adults aged 18 to 60 do not. Onowa McIvor (Indigenous education) and Peter Jacobs (linguistics) just wrapped up the first study of the Mentor-Apprentice Program for Indigenous adult language learners in BC.

International quest to spread inclusion

In the basement of the library, in a quiet area behind compact shelving, there’s a spot where students meet to secretly eat and talk. When Maram Alraygi discovered it, it became her favourite place to pray, providing a little spiritual break, she says in the midst of a full day of studying. And she liked sharing the hidden space with others. “I experienced the most blessed time there,” says the Master’s of Education grad.

UVic’s 11th 3M National Teaching Fellowship recipient drives tomorrow’s teachers to rethink curriculum and the student experience. David Blades believes education is a political act and teachers need to be up front about that. “You’re always educating for something, toward something,” says the professor of science education and curriculum theory.

Never too early for "the talk"

Most children receive their first sexual information from a source other than their parents or teachers. The main source: the Internet. As children become tethered to electronic devices at a younger and younger age, parents need to have “the talk” earlier and earlier, says Jillian Roberts, child psychologist and associate professor of educational psychology at the University of Victoria. Roberts wanted to write a book to help parents and educators begin conversations with young children in a way that is respectful and culturally sensitive, before they see too much online.

Education grad Mike Irvine took academia beneath the waves for his scuba-diving master's defence When education grad student Mike Irvine first posed his master’s project research question to his advisor, the idea struck Jason Price as a humourous oxymoron. Irvine wanted to explore how technology could be used as a tool to reconnect kids to nature.
