DMSC professor publishes op-ed about the importance of fundamental science

Dr. Leigh Anne Swayne, Associate Professor in the Division of Medical Sciences, talks about fundamental science, “the curiosity-driven form of science that virtually every major scientific breakthrough is built on,” and how, each year, it’s “losing ground . . . to research driven by funders’ priorities rather than researchers’ curiosity.”

Gairdner Foundation to host October Event

The Gairdner Foundation National Program is hosting a event on Monday, October 23, 3:30pm to 6:00pm. This event requires RSVP to attend. The event will take place at the University of British Columbia, but will be shared via video-conference at UVic in the Medical Sciences Building, Room 160.

DMSC professor receives funding for postpartum mental health research

Dr. Nichole Fairbrother, an Assistant Professor in UBC’s Department of Psychiatry and an affiliate with UVic’s Division of Medical Sciences, has received funding from Island Health to continue her research on first-time mothers’ thoughts of infant-related harm and postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Laura Arbour receives funding to study potentially fatal genetic condition in Northern BC First Nations communities

Dr. Laura Arbour, a UBC Professor of Medical Genetics and an Affiliate Professor in UVic’s Division of Medical Sciences, was recently awarded two operating grants by the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR). The grants will support Dr. Arbour’s Community Genetics Research Program, which studies how a rare genetic condition, called Long QT Syndrome, disproportionally affects First Nations populations in Northern BC.
