JCURA recipients' workshops

Students are very welcome to visit the Centre for Academic Communication (CAC) to get feedback on their writing and their posters. Please book an appointment with Nancy, Gillian, Madeline or Kaveh.

Are you a JCURA recipient? We’re here to help! We offer a support series to help you “Prepare for the Fair”!

Research Ethics Approval and Workshop
If your JCURA research project involves collecting data from human participants (interviews, surveys, observations, etc.), using or collecting human biological materials (blood, urine, cell lines, etc.) or accessing existing data sets or reports that are protected (e.g., patient files, government data sets, etc.) your research must be reviewed and approved by the UVic Human Research Ethics Board (UVIC Research Policy 1250) BEFORE you commence research activities. The ethical review process cannot be conducted after you have collected data. Your supervisor is responsible for ensuring that you are appropriately mentored on this process, but we are also pleased to be offering research ethics workshop sessions for JCURA students on the following dates:

Dates:    Thursday, September 27, 2018, 2:30-4:00 PM, HHB 128
              Monday, October 15, 2018, 1:00-2:30 PM, HHB 128

These two sessions are identical so it is only necessary to attend one. To register for one of these sessions, please go to the LTSI Calendar of Events and click on the month, then scroll down to the event being offered and register for that event.

The ethics will cover the basics for student researchers including what studies require research ethics review and approval, and what to do if you and your supervisor are unsure whether your project requires research ethics clearance. We encourage you to visit the university’s Human Research Ethics website to access application forms, application guidelines, and additional resources. Knowing about research ethics is crucial to any budding researcher's career. Even if your JCURA project would not require ethical approval, you may find the workshop helpful.

JCURA Student Get Together
Join fellow JCURA recipients to share interests, research ideas and some problem-solving. Each session will be informal and student-directed. Light refreshments will be available.

Dates: Tuesday, November 20, 2018 - 1-2:30 PM, HHB 128
           Friday. January 25, 2019 - 10:00-11:30 AM, HHB 128
