Harry Hickman Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching and Educational Leadership

This award bears the name of Harry Hickman who had a distinguished career as a scholar, teacher, and principal of Victoria College. He was acting president of the University of Victoria, and head of the Modern Languages and French departments. This award recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and educational leadership.

Gilian Sherwin Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Gilian Sherwin Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching bears the name of a former senior lab instructor in the Geography department who, for 21 years, was a strong supporter of better teaching at the university, an active member of the advisory committee of the Learning and Teaching Centre, and a regular participant in the training of teaching assistants. This award—for which Sessional Instructors, Lab Instructors and Senior Lab Instructors are eligible— is a tribute to Gilian Sherwin’s commitment to the art of teaching and the influence she had on many students and colleagues.

Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research-Enriched Teaching

This award recognizes exceptional contributions by a faculty member in bringing research alive in the classroom by exposing students to the intellectual stimulation of UVic's research culture, providing them with opportunities to engage in research and learn research related habits and aptitudes including curiosity, systematic problem solving, information acquisition and organization, analysis, communication and continuous learning.

Andy Farquharson Teaching Excellence Award for Graduate Students

This award, named after a past Director of the Learning and Teaching Centre, is for registered graduate students who have excelled in their teaching during the preceding calendar year. This category is open to Graduate Students who are:

  • Teaching Assistants involved in teaching activities at UVic during the 12 months prior to the deadline (generally hired under CUPE 4163).
  • Lab Instructors or Senior Lab Instructors.
  • Sessional instructors are no longer eligible.

Up to three awards are given out annually. There is a recognition ceremony every year, but each department is encouraged to showcase individual achievements and skills.

The nomination packages will be available at the end of November and will be announced each year. The nomination form and further information can be found on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website or from departmental Graduate Secretaries.

Application Process

Each department, or academic unit, is invited to select an awardee.

Criteria has been defined by the Faculty of Graduate Studies in consultation with the Division of Learning and Teaching Support and Innovation (LTSI) and can be found in the nomination package.

The 3M National Teaching Fellowship is a prestigious Canadian award granted to outstanding faculty and instructors in post-secondary institutions.

STLHE Brightspace Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning

"Desire2Learn believes in supporting and encouraging outstanding, innovative educators" - John Baker, President and CEO of Desire2Learn.

The STLHE Brightspace Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning (formerly the Desire2Learn Innovation Award) celebrates innovative teaching and learning approaches in post-secondary education, both nationally and internationally.

Through this award, educators are encouraged to explore, experiment and reflect on innovative teaching and learning techniques.
