Laurene Sheilds is the Executive Director of the Learning and Teaching Support and Innovation (LTSI) division at UVic. She is a full professor in the School of Nursing and an adjunct professor in the School of Public Health and Social Policy within the Faculty of Human and Social Development, where for 10 years she served as Associate Dean-Academic. A settler, born onto the ancestral lands of the Lekwungen Peoples, Laurene is an alumna of UVic (BSN) and holds a Masters and PhD in School and Community Health from the University of Oregon.

Laurene has extensive experience in curriculum design and academic program development and review. She led the development of the new School of Public Health and Social Policy at UVic and she served as its inaugural director. In her associate dean role, she was responsible for student academic concerns, online program delivery and the UVic Family Centre. Laurene is committed to promoting academic excellence through fostering an intellectually challenging, creative and supportive environment for students and faculty. She continues to be active in research focusing on using narrative methodologies to illuminate people’s experiences of living with life-threatening illness.
