Margo Matwychuk
Director/adviser for social justice studies
Office: Cornett B210

Margo Matwychuk is a social cultural anthropologist with a long standing interest in issues of social justice, inequality, power, poverty, and activism in Canada and Latin America. She has worked with colleagues and students locally on issues related to housing and homelessness, food security, poverty, and community activism. She is currently a member of the Community Social Planning Council’s Community Action Plan on Poverty. She was previously a Co-Chair of the Research, Evaluation and Data Working Group and a member of the Management Committee of the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness.

Margo worked in Brazil for many years looking at the political economy of agro-industry, at gender, class and racialized inequalities, and social justice movements. At UVic, she is a member of the Provost’s Diversity & Equity Steering Committee and an Advisory Committee member for the Centre for Co-operative and Community-Based Economy. Throughout this work, she has maintained a strong concern with the practices and potential of women's intersectional coalitions, anti-poverty organizations, community associations, and other such community- and identity-based organizations to effect emancipatory practices and everyday resistances.
