Credit monitoring

Posted on Jan. 30, 2013

In the wake of a privacy breach in January 2012, the university offered free credit monitoring for one year to affected individuals. This service expires one year from the date of enrolment.

The UVic-paid credit monitoring service will not be extended given that there have been no known instances of fraudulent activity associated with the privacy breach, the nature of the personal information involved, and the availability of other protective mechanisms for individuals such as credit flags, self-monitoring of banking transactions and free annual credit reports from the TransUnion and Equifax credit bureaus. Should new information become available, this decision will be re-evaluated.

We continue to recommend that the best practices identified in the updated Identity Theft Protection Checklist be followed to protect your personal information.

Please note: The deadline for all reimbursements related to bank account changes associated with the privacy breach is February 15, 2013.
