Saanich Police release information on their investigation

On Jan. 26, 2012 Saanich Police reported at a news conference that they had recovered equipment believed stolen during the Jan. 7-8 break-in at the University of Victoria. They have confirmed that one of two media storage devices recovered was not from UVic. Both devices were wiped clean of information.

Investigators earlier ruled out a connection to the UVic theft in five of the six fraud/identity-theft cases brought to their attention by concerned employees. The sixth case is a particularly complex one that occurred on January 9 and involved online purchases where a link to the UVic theft may never be definitively proven or ruled out.

The university will continue to share information about the privacy breach. UVic is cooperating fully with the police investigation. Information about the criminal investigation will be made public by the police according to their own purpose and timelines. UVic does not always receive this information in advance of its distribution to the news media.

UVic advises all those whose personal information was compromised to remain vigilant and to follow the advice provided for protecting personal information.
