Not your average summer camps

The Faculty of Humanities' Summer Day-Camps (SCAMPS) run in July and August this year. Get the UVic Advantage with camps planned by experts and run by highly-educated staff so your child(ren) will learn as they play this summer (we promise, they won’t even notice).

Summer 2020 Camps are offered in French, English, German, and Mandarin (new)!

French Camps:

Sous l’Océan – July 6-10 | Ages 6-12 | Offered in French only | $280

Love sand, sea creatures, and all things water? Climb aboard the SCAMPS submarine as we discover diverse sea life at the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea, create ocean inspired crafts, learn about our oceans en Francais, and much more! This week will also feature a beach day, camp games, and lots of time outside!

Manie Médiévale – July 13-17 | Ages 6-12 | Offered in French only | $280

Hear ye hear ye! Transport back in time with us as we explore the Medieval Ages. Activities will involve accessing UVic’s unique library facilities as we get hands-on experience with some of the coolest tools in UVic’s collections. Campers will sharpen their French skills as they study European history through storytelling, crafts, and games.

Dans la Forêt – July 20-24 | Ages 6-12 | Offered in French only | $280

Calling all adventurers! Join us for a week of learning about the weird and wonderful creatures of Vancouver Island. Get ready to test your skills during fort building, knot tying, designing fairy-houses, a day at the beach, and much more!

Tech et Société – 27-31 | Ages 6-12 | Offered in French only | $280

Jump deep into the 21st century to gain hands-on experience with some of UVic’s most awesome tools and technologies. We will use a variety of technologies to talk about how they work, why we might want to use them, and why we need to remember the golden rule of “everything in moderation.” Campers will also be treated to exploring modern society through a trip to Cadboro Bay and plenty of outdoor adventure time!

Déesses et Gladiateurs – August 4-7 | Ages 6-12 | Offered in French only | $225

As this is a short week, fees are reduced. Travel back in time to the days of Ancient Greece with us to gaze at the stars, excavate precious findings, and practice for the Olympics! Activities will include a trip to UVic’s observatory (one of the largest optical telescopes on any Canadian university campus!), discovering some of Greece’s favourite constellations, and learning to tell stories in the style of Greek mythology!

Aventures d'animaux – August 10-14 | Ages 6-12 | Offered in French only| $280

Come learn how to walk, talk, and play like an animal! Forest games, animal art, and a trip to Cadboro Bay will help us explore the wild and wonderful world of animals while sharpening our French vocabulary and descriptive skills. A highlight will be the special attention paid to our local animals and the rare Garry Oak ecosystem during our trip to Fort Rodd Hill!

This week of learning promises to be packed with fun and action, and to get you ready for the epic “boss fight” on the final day of the SCAMPS Mandarin Quest!

Ages:

We have designed the camps with two streams in mind: one for 6-9 year-olds, and another for 9-12 year-olds. Sometimes campers will participate in activities all together, and other times they will be divided up to pursue developmentally-appropriate activities. If you have concerns about your child’s level of participation, please do not hesitate to contact us at scamps@uvic.ca.

Supervision:

Your child(ren) will be supervised by a team of leaders experienced in organizing activities for children. Staff is chosen with the utmost care in terms of:

  • Qualifications – educators have expertise in the relevant subject areas
  • experience with children
  • reference checks
  • criminal record check
  • first-aid certification

The maximum leader/child ratio will be 1 to 7; most often it is 1 to 5.

Behaviour: Educators use a variety of strategies to implement the standards policy: setting limits; using natural and logical consequences; offering appropriate choices; using positive reinforcement; encouraging effective problem solving. As attendees and educators are expected to live and act in a spirit of mutual respect at all times, children who repeatedly engage in disruptive behaviour and ignore warnings shall be asked to leave the program.
