Director's Message

Hello! Bonjour!

This is a very challenging world of longstanding inequities and environmental threats; the essence of our role as human beings is questioned. When children come and ask us what we do in life, we would like to answer them that we contribute to make the world better. Public administration and community development are key in this agenda.

The School of Public Administration develops leading edge thinkers and professionals who will have a positive impact on the different orders of government, nonprofit organizations and communities in British Columbia, Canada, and around the world. Our School supports over 500 students, with 100+ graduating each year. As students, professors, and staff, through our research, teaching, and engagement, we strive to improve the society we live in.

The School of Public Administration at the University of Victoria is situated on the traditional territory of the Coast Salish People and to this day the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples continue their relationship with this land. Our commitment as a School to build respectful relationships with the various Nations and diverse people and to better respect our environment create an amazing momentum for contributing to social betterment.

The School offers a large variety of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We offer programs on-campus and online that will allow you to continue working while acquiring a new degree.

The MPA On Campus offers an extraordinary environment with a co-op component. The Co-op Program provides real work experience for our students with job placements in the provincial and federal governments, local institutions, and internationally. Our School is well renowned for its excellence in training, the support we offer to our students through the co-op program, and creating opportunities for building professional networks.

Did you know that we were the first in Canada to offer an MPA exclusively online? Our students benefit from the longstanding experience of our instructors in online pedagogy.

Our Master of Arts in Community Development, Diploma in Indigenous Community Development and Governance, and various diplomas and certificates will increase your knowledge and skills for a positive contribution in the work place, and more largely to your community.

As members of the School of Public Administration, we defend the values of integrity, engaged and courageous scholarship, sustainability and inclusivity. The School builds on its values, research, and interdisciplinary expertise to offer high quality education to its students.

As students in our School, you will benefit from being exposed to the rich multidisciplinary environment. You will be invited to contribute to identifying solutions to our contemporary challenges by participating in case studies with people having various perspectives. You will be able to navigate complex settings, and capable of assessing whether and how programs and policies add value to society, in a way that respects the broader public interest and ethics of your profession.

The School of Public Administration benefits from funding received by generous donors and the Faculty of Graduate Studies. We support our students through entrance and donor awards, and each year allocate around $290,000 to support our students in their studies.

I invite you to explore the variety of programs we offer and prepare to apply yourself and make a difference!
