TITLE: Research Assistant, Graduate level

SALARY: $26.08/4hr a week plus 14% vacation and mandatory deductions (120 hours maximum between April 2020-September 2020; literature review and data gathering/dissemination completed June 1, 2020)

Description & Project Tile: Instilling Service Based Learning Through the BSN Program

This exciting Community Engaged Learning (CEL) Grant explores service learning as an innovative strategy for development of a pedagogical pathway toward integrating theory and practice, i.e. working to promote community and societal health. The objectives of this project are to 1) advance service learning as a framework to guide theory and practice-based courses in nursing undergraduate programs and to 2) establish and sustain community-based partnership for facilitating a service-learning framework.

We are looking for a research assistant at the graduate level to conduct a scoping review of best practice models related to service learning in Canadian nursing programs; to assist in scheduling meetings and agendas; and to help disseminate findings. The research assistant will work under the guidance of the project co-leads Dr(s). Maureen Ryan and Nancy Clark.

Research Trainee Job Description Duties & Responsibilities

The Research Trainee position will provide research assistance to understanding instilling service based learning for undergraduate nursing students and work in collaboration with the project investigators.

  • Conduct literature and data gathering on service-based learning models, particularly within nursing education.
  • Participate in the development of writing up the findings such as reports and publications.  Assist the study PIs with research and outreach work as needed.
  • Attend team meetings and assist with administrative support as required
  • Graduate student (MA) in a relevant discipline
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary team
  • Experience or interest in scoping reviews
  • Some familiarity with academic and/or policy literature relevant to this topic
  • High level of facility with databases
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience or interest working collaboratively multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong writing skills in synthesizing complex ideas and translating academic concepts for a wider audience
  • Able to manage multiple responsibilities and tasks effectively

We are looking for a candidate that is interested in supporting quality education and is able to devote most of research assistant activities to conduct a scoping review.

Key competencies:

  • Ability to conduct literature reviews using a variety of sources including online academic journals, organization websites.
  • Ability to synthesize data to identify best practice trends in Service Base Learning
  • Good writing, editing and communication skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to self-manage time to meet deadlines within the established timelines
  • Confidence to go through a lot of information independently and to communicate findings to supervisors and other stakeholders; asks clarifying questions
