Ryan Rhodes has been named to an international team of experts who will advise tech giant Google on new health technologies.

Rhodes, a professor of health psychology in the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education, and Director of the Behavioral Medicine Laboratory at the University of Victoria, is among 12 distinguished professionals and scholars appointed to Google’s newly formed Consumer Health Advisory Panel.

“This panel of experts will provide clinical and scientific guidance to ensure that Google’s health technologies (especially those leveraging AI, wearables, and personalized health insights) are grounded in robust research and developed responsibly,” the company announced in a written statement.

Rhodes is the only scholar from a Canadian institution on the advisory panel. He joins distinguished leaders across disciplines including physical activity, sleep, digital health and artificial intelligence. Rhodes joins two other scholars from Duke University and Stanford on the advisory panel who specialize in physical activity and health behaviour change.

“I think this has some really exciting possibilities for healthy behaviour change,” Rhodes says.
