Kim Daly wins teaching excellence award

A relational educator who fosters trust, respect and belonging has earned the Faculty of Health's Teaching Excellence and Educational Leadership Award.

Kim Daly, an associate teaching professor in the School of Nursing, was honoured at Health Research Day in May for her teaching.

Blythe Bell, an assistant teaching professor who nominated Daly, says Daly’s teaching emphasizes connection, real-world relevance and supportive classroom culture.

“Known for a warm, humorous, ‘shoot-from-the-hip’ approach grounded in real-life nursing practice, Kim sets high expectations while cultivating inclusive, well-being-focused learning environments,” wrote Bell.

As associate director of the undergraduate nursing program and fulltime faculty member since 2018, Daly provides academic leadership in curriculum and evaluation across four institutions and has led national initiatives advancing Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC) equity and socially just, anti-racist teaching.

"This award is meaningful because it underscores the importance of relational, inclusive teaching in health education," Daly says. "I’m fortunate to work with colleagues and students who are committed to equity, collaboration, and transformative learning, and this recognition reflects that shared vision."

Associate Dean Academic Maureen Ryan says Daly’s work reflects a deep commitment to student success, collaborative learning, and transformative educational practice.

Teaching Scholarship Grants winners

The Faculty of Health also announced the recipients of this year’s Health Teaching Scholarship Grants.

This year, two teams of faculty members were awarded $7,500 each to support projects that facilitate excellence in teaching and learning across health programs.

Nursing’ s Leanne Kelly was awarded a grant for her project “Creating Relational Partnerships and Transformational Nursing Education through Land and Place Based Learning Opportunities”.

The project will give fourth-year undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing students an opportunity to enhance their nursing practice through place-based and land-led learning with Knowledge Holder-led seminars.

This work will be supported by team School of Nursing contributors Sarah Yee, Carrie Pomeroy, Joy Phillips, and Emily Doehnel.

The second teaching scholarship grant was awarded to Health Information Science’s Dillon Chrimes and Alyssa Foote for their project, “Integrating Robots and IoT Sensor Smart Home Technologies into Undergraduate Health Informatics Education for Experiential Learning and Decision-Making.”

This project will integrate smart home technologies into undergraduate health informatics education at the University of Victoria. It aims to enhance experiential learning by embedding IoT sensors, robotics, kiosks, smart beds, and avatar systems into courses.

Ryan says the grant-winning projects exemplify excellence in teaching scholarship.

“We are confident that this work will make a meaningful contribution to teaching and learning within the Faculty of Health and beyond,” she says.
