The Gustavson School of Business welcomes Phillip Rubel, global marketing leader, as a new executive in residence

June 22, 2021, Victoria, BC – The Gustavson School of Business is excited to announce that Phillip Rubel will be bringing his deep understanding of international marketing to Gustavson’s faculty and students as an incoming executive in residence. Rubel’s extensive career spans regional, national and global roles in Asia Pacific, Canada, Japan, Korea and the U.S. 

“Gustavson is pleased to welcome Phil Rubel to our school in this new capacity,” says Dean Saul Klein. “In addition to his extensive and impressive marketing leadership roster, he has served for many years as a member of our International Advisory Board. Making his expertise more directly available to students, faculty and staff will be an incredible asset to our community.”

Throughout his career, Rubel has cultivated a unique combination of corporate and entrepreneurial skill sets applied to a broad range of consumer, luxury and healthcare categories, bringing invaluable experience to the Gustavson community.  

In addition to doing the honours of an executive-in-residence, Rubel will continue in his role as a member of Gustavson’s International Advisory Board, helping the school achieve its globally focused strategic goals. 

“I’ve long felt that Gustavson has been ahead of the curve in preparing students for success operating in an internationally-connected business environment,” explains Rubel. “Marketing innovation, and competition, now come from anywhere, anytime and in any sector and I hope to help students, faculty and staff accelerate and hone their skills in this ever-changing environment.”

Previous to his most recent role as director of marketing and communications at Philip Morris International where he contributed to driving a bold new transformation for the company,  Rubel was the managing director of Designit in Japan, a partner at KPMG for digital transformation and co-founded the Japan office of Saatchi & Saatchi Fallon Tokyo, becoming their CEO & representative director. Prior to his role at Saatchi & Saatchi Fallon, Rubel was the chief operating officer of McCann Erickson Worldgroup Japan. 

Rubel has been a champion for international development and sports, sitting on the board of trustees for HOPE International and serving with the American Chamber of Commerce as co-chair for the Olympics & Sports Committee and the Advertising & Communications Committee. 

He will start his new role July 1, 2021.
